The #1 Myth About "Free" Credit Card Golf

When an Indian credit card advertises "Complimentary Golf Rounds," it covers only the Green Fee (the admission to the course). Mandatory caddie fees, golf cart fees, turf insurance, and taxes are never covered by the bank. You will still pay ₹800 to ₹1,800 out-of-pocket at the pro shop on the day of play.

1. Rounds vs. Lessons: Don't Conflate Them

Banks structure their golf benefits into two distinctly different categories:

  • Complimentary Golf Round: Access to play 9 or 18 holes on a championship course. To use this, you must hold a valid handicap certificate (or be certified by the host club professional as playing-ready). If you are a complete beginner, courses will refuse you tee-time access even with a confirmed card booking.
  • Complimentary Golf Lesson: A 45-minute one-on-one session with a certified golf coach at a participating driving range, including a practice ball bucket. This is the benefit complete beginners should use.

3. The 5 Rules of Card Golf Booking

  1. Strict Advance Notice Windows: You cannot show your credit card at the clubhouse counter and demand a tee time. All bank bookings must be submitted via third-party aggregators (principally Thriwe or Golftripz) at least 4 to 7 clear working days in advance.
  2. Strict Cancellation Policies: If you cancel within 48 hours of your tee time or fail to show up, the bank will deduct the full green fee from your card or forfeit your golf entitlement for the remainder of the quarter.
  3. Weekend Quotas Are Severely Capped: Most cards permit only 1 weekend game per month or quarter, because clubs reserve weekend mornings strictly for their own dues-paying members.
  4. Out-of-Pocket Caddie & Cart Fees: You must pay the club's mandatory caddie fee (₹400–₹600), caddie tip (₹200–₹400), and cart hire (if mandatory) directly at check-in.
  5. Player Readiness Checks: If booking a round, host clubs have the right to request proof of handicap (e.g., USGA handicap index or Indian Golf Union handicap card) to prevent pace-of-play disruptions.
